Questions Families Ask About Death Cleanup in Shortsville, NY
What is the best way to clean out my parents' home after their death?
Start with safety. If the death was unattended, biohazard cleanup comes first. Then set aside papers, photos and valuables, sort the rest by room and book hauling. An estate cleanout team can do the heavy work while the family makes decisions.
Do I need to be at the property during cleanup?
In many cases no. Ask the team how access and keys can be set up. A landlord, property manager or representative can often meet the crew. You can ask the team to set aside photos, papers and keepsakes for you.
Does hot weather make the problem worse?
Yes. Heat speeds the changes that cause fluids and odor, and a closed home can hold strong smells. The cleanup steps stay the same, but acting soon after the property is released helps keep the odor from spreading further.
Who cleans up after a dead body is removed?
A biohazard cleanup team does. After the funeral home or the medical examiner takes the person from the home, the room still holds fluids and odor. Cleanup technicians remove contaminated materials, disinfect and treat the air.
What is considered an unattended death?
An unattended death is one where no one was with the person and they were not found for some time. It may be a few days or much longer. The term describes how the death was discovered, not the cause. Cleanup is needed because body fluids and odor may remain.
Does homeowners insurance cover unattended death cleanup?
Many homeowners policies cover death cleanup after the deductible, though some exclude certain causes. Renters policies often cover belongings but not the building. Call your insurer before cleanup starts, take photos if you can and keep every receipt.
